Photography workshops in

Slovenia

Slovenia is a truly amazing little country that is wedged nicely between the Alps and Adriatic Sea. As such, it’s a land of great diversity.

On this workshop you will photograph soaring, jagged mountain peaks whose snowy peaks fill the abundant lakes, rivers and waterfalls that irrigate the lush valleys below. On almost every hillside you’ll spot lovely churches and castles, many with the most breathtaking mountain backdrops. We will visit a couple of the best ones.

Locations include but are not limited to

  • Lake Bled
  • Jezero Jasna
  • Pericnik Slap (waterfall)
  • Sveti Tomaz (St Thomas Church)
  • Tolmin Gorge
  • Soca River Valley
  • Planina Zajamniki
  • And many more along the way

Lake Bled & Lake Jasna

Slovenia is a land of lakes backed by soaring alpine mountains. There are 321 lakes in Slovenia. Nowhere is this more evident than in the north of the country. Three great mountain ranges dominate the horizons: Julian Alps, Kamnik Alps & Karavanke Alps.

Our base for the workshop is at Lake Bled. This beautiful alpine lake is the stuff that legends are made of. Situated in northern Slovenia, Lake Bled encompasses both a 17th-century church on an island in the middle of the lake, and a medieval castle on a clifftop overlooking it all. Add to that a towering mountain backdrop, provided by the Karavanke Alps, and you have all the ingredients for the perfect landscape photograph.

Heading a bit further north we come to Lake Jasna (clear lake), which is backed by the majestic sight of the Julian Alps, the highest range in Slovenia. The jagged peaks of Mt. Prisojnik and Mt. Razor are often perfectly reflected in the still clear water.

Waterfalls, Rivers and Valleys

In Slovenia water is in abundance. There are countless waterfalls, rapids and rivers cutting their way through beautiful valleys and deep gorges. The Soča Valley is the perfect example.

Before we head to the valley though, we’ll first stop at Slap Peričnik (Peričnik Waterfall), located in the Vrata Valley. This is a double waterfall, with the upper part being the smallest (16 metres) and lower part the largest (52 metres).

The Soča is a 138-kilometre long river that flows through western Slovenia and has carved out a stunning verdant valley framed by the towering peaks of the Julian Alps. Here we will photograph some its most picturesque scenery such as Tolmin Gorge and Kozjak Waterfall.

Churches and mountains

Slovenia is also a land of churches. With almost 3000 churches to be found dotted around the country, it’s no surprise that pretty much everywhere you look you will see one.

The real beauty though, lies not in the churches themselves but their locations. There are numerous scenes with a church placed strategically on a hill right in front of a stunning mountain backdrop. Two of the most photogenic are Saint Thomas Church and the church at Jamnik.

The beauty of Slovenia is that the mountains are, in most cases, easily accessible. We will see this as we drive over the breathtaking passes of Vrsič and Mangart to photograph the incredible views from above.

We will also visit some plateaus where we can photograph interesting wooden shepherd huts and Kozolec (wooden hay racks).

The itinerary for this workshop is very flexible and will be set out on a day-by-day basis depending on the weather / light conditions. With a small group size of 4 participants, you can be sure that you will receive plenty of 1-to-1 tuition. This means you can learn as much as you possibly can during the week.
